- Peter Temple – Class of ‘52
The first buss our school sported really belonged to another school which was clearly proclaimed on its side in striking letters: “St XAVIERS’S HIGH SCHOOL”. Even so our school was grateful for this concession being too ubder0age to have a bus of her own. I was rather young during this time of our Bus History (being then only 8 years old) – so it is very understandable if any memories of this ‘Bus Era’ are not so clearly etched in my mind as those of the succeeding stages. However, I can well remember being quite adaptable to changing to Transport II. In 1952 we invested in a grey bus – quite shabby – but which proudly advertised not only ‘CAMPION SCHOOL’ but also its telephone number. This bus was exactly like a lame dog and we often had to get out and give it helping hand to help it on its way. It used to shake so much it nearly shook the life and light of us and as each of us walked out we looked like pieces of chewed string.
But now we have a new bus
Painted red and white,
Colours bright and shiny
That causes us much delight.
Though the driver needs a uniform
To make the picture right
Still one fault there is we bring to mind
The seats are very low we find
And so our heads come very much
Below the window line
